Land allocated to an NGO that is saving horses from slaughter
For the first time ever, the non-governmental organization RMJ’s Horse Rescue opened its doors to the public in March. The Lands Authority allocated lands to this NGO, that is now operating from a facility in Siġġiewi.
What was once a pig farm is now home to around 40 horses, the majority of which were race horses, both locally and internationally.
Apart from the attention they give to the horses, the NGO’s volunteers have worked to transform the land allocated to the into a suitable one with stables and an indoor area where they can roam around, even in a shaded area in several Nissen huts.
Many of the horses have retired from racing. Despite their career having ended, they are otherwise healthy and still young. The NGO works to try to find a home for these horses or to keep them for children to be able to ride them etc. Their goal is to educate
the public and encourage more people to join voluntary work to save horses from being sent to slaughter.
